5 Reasons You’re Are Feeling Stuck At Work, And What To Do About It.

Whether you want to get promoted or you want a change in your career but don’t know where to start, below are five focus points for moving forward.

1. Strengths

Stand-out at 1 specific strength. Find out what others think about you.

  • Conduct informal interviews, talk to your peers, boss and a team for an honest opinion.
  • Conduct a 360 assessment
  • Choose a strength/competency and work on it.

2. Complementary skills

Build behaviour’s and skills to amplify your strength.

Think like an athlete. An outstanding tennis player doesn’t only play tennis; he runs, swims, does yoga. If your core strength is ‘developing a strategic perspective’, build on skills that will help you persuade others to take action like connecting with others, fostering team work etc.

3. Power/Politics

Accept that you need power to get things done. You don’t have to be a ‘Machiavelli’, nor a ‘Lamb’ but you do need others to succeed.

– What do people need from you to accomplish their goals
– How do you manage other people’s impressions of you
– How comfortable are you with influencing others.

4. Executive Presence

Build awareness about yourself and how other’s perceive you.

  • How do you present yourself
  • How effectively do you communicate
  • How deep are your expertise.

5. Confidence

Increase your confidence levels.

  • Get clear on your goals and what you want to achieve.
  • Get detailed about your education and experience wherever you can.
  • Build a network with other industries and organisations.
  • Find out from recruiters what kind of requirements win.
